Why DeLoia-Horn Consultancy began

At our core, we believe that education and research change and save lives, and transform communities.  These are the reasons that we have long dedicated our  lives and careers to higher education.

Challenges at hand
The meaning of higher education is changing; increasingly it must meet cultural, political, academic, and economic expectations.

  • Technology advances provide education access to the masses, but at the same time have disrupted the familiar face-to-face classroom, an education cornerstone.

  • Costs to attend college have risen far faster than inflation.

  • Individuals and businesses alike are questioning the value of a college degree and are considering education in non-traditional formats, such as MOOC’s, badges and stackable credentials, and customized degree programs.

  • Intercultural competence and diversity are increasingly needed to compete and recruit in changing US and global demographics.

  • On the research front, demands for grants exceeds the supply. Yet, heightened expectations for external funding persist for individual faculty and for institutions, coupled with increased competition and lower success rates.

  • Increased costs of federal research compliance requirements, loss of public trust and confidence in research, and insufficient research leadership prepared and willing to address this complex landscape increase the burden on universities.

  • In the face of these complexities, institutional education and research programs must also pass extensive and often-costly accreditation requirements set forth by national agencies to maintain reputation and stature. Not surprising, a rising number of universities choose to re-invent themselves, merge, or close.

  • More than ever, businesses and organizations across public and private sectors also seek academic partnership. But a lack of mutual understanding of culture and operations often stops or stalls positive results.

Meeting the challenge
No doubt, some challenges can be addressed internally. But institutions alone do not hold all of the answers, as evidenced by the increasing use of external consultants by more colleges and universities. We believe that institutions that adopt collaborative innovation models will excel in education and research and will establish competitive positions, whereas institutions that remain internally focused in business-as-usual models will be slower to market, incur higher development and administrative costs, and lose competitive edge. Collaborative innovation, across public and private sectors, is paramount to institutions becoming or remaining front-runners in the changing landscape of education and research.

DeLoia-Horn Consultancy guides clients in best practices for collaborative innovation, across public and private sectors, strengthening capacity to deliver stand-out signature programs or initiatives in education and research.
